Angler Profile – Oliver Ngy
#AimHighDREAMBig. That’s how Oliver Ngy ended his last statement after I asked him what advice he would give young anglers coming up in the fishing industry.
“Excel first and foremost at school. You won’t make it far in this industry if you cannot represent yourself in an intelligent, professional manner,” Oliver told me. A quote that speaks volumes to the type of guy he is.
Spending majority of his life in Los Angeles, California, Oliver stumbled into fishing at the age of ten. “I was a bored kid at a family picnic at the local park lake and decided to tie some old line I found onto a stick and try my hand at fishing,’’ Oliver notes. ‘’Against all odds, I actually got a bite but didn’t land the monster (probably a bluegill). However, at that exact moment I was fascinated and the passion has grown ever since that first bite.’’
That first bite began the journey of an angler who is leading the pack when it comes to innovating the fishing régime in California and beyond. A leader in the big swimbait movement, you can often catch Oliver throwing some monster lure in search for monster bass.
‘’The bigger baits are, for ME, my most effective tool for targeting big bass. I grew up fishing all traditional styles of lures and consider myself proficient at the fundamentals of bass fishing. With that being said, there’s nothing like getting a bite on a monster sized lure that could be the biggest fish of your life.”
It is the big bait = big bass thought process that has fueled his own movement – Big Bass Dreams – something that he says brings the passion we all share as anglers (especially for big fish and the emotions they elicit) to the forefront of our sport and the needed attention to this incredible lifestyle we live that others may not be aware of.
The lifestyle he speaks of is projected in his apparel line, which sports positive messages he and his brand lives by. “(The message) applies to both fishing and life situations with the DREAM theme being the most prominent. After all, if you’re not DREAMING with every cast you’re making then what are you doing?’’
But Oliver shines brightest in his fishing videos that highlights many of his big bass catches throughout California, with the showcase being his feature film titled (you guessed it) Big Bass Dreams: The Movement, which includes over 45 minutes of monster bass being caught in public waters throughout California, Arizona, and Texas.
When it comes to his creativity, uniqueness, and the ability to affect change in the fishing industry it is clear Oliver will be a pioneer to this sport for years to come.
